Who will win the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open?

With just one week remaining until the 150th Open Championship, and the final major of the season, the Scottish Open is primed to provide a fantastic test for a strong field. A number of the world’s best turn out at the Renaissance Club, minus a few notable and well-publicised absentees, so we are sure to get some high quality golf at a tournament steeped in tradition. I have scoured the field for value this week, and have purposefully ignored the top of the market as I feel there is enough quality at big prices to find a decent winner. Who have I picked? Venue: Renaissance Club, North Berwick, Scotland

Date: July 7-10, 2022

Course stats: Par 71; 7,300 yards

Course summary: Designed by Tom Doak in 2008, the Renaissance Club features firm, fast, undulating fairways sandwiched between deep fescue rough which will penalise players out of position. Challenging bunkers protect the greens, but the course’s main defence is the coastal winds. A lot of the scoring will depend on the behaviour of the elements, but previous links form could be vital for success here.

Purse: $8,000,000

Bazza’s Banker: Ryan Fox – 2pt e/w @ 45/1 with bet365

Ryan Fox is on fire this season, and is easily the most in-form player on the DP World Tour. While many of the world’s elite travel over from the PGA Tour for this one, Fox has a great chance to use his recent rise to catch a few cold as they prepare for next week’s major.

Fox was second last week in Ireland, and has four top-three finishes in his last six events. Amazingly, if you take out the two major championships he has played this season, Fox has only finished outside the top-10 once – when he was 15th – in eight starts. That type of form is just incredible, and I certainly don’t need any further convincing that 40/1 is a great price here.

The Each-Way Play: Lucas Herbert – 1pt e/w @ 70/1 with bet365

Lucas Herbert had a great week in Ireland last week, finishing 9th, and has excellent course form at the Renaissance Club. Consecutive 4th-place finishes in 2019 and 2021 demonstrates that Herbert clearly likes it around here, and when you consider that his three career wins in Bermuda and Ireland and Dubai all came at wind-affected tracks, he should have a great chance.

Herbert is starting now to mix it with the best in the world, something that will be crucial in this type of field, as he finished 13th at PGA Championship and 7th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational this year. In the last six months, Herbert ranks 1st for SG: Putting and 21st for SG: Around-the-Green, so certainly has the skillset to take this title at a big price.

The Longshot: Robert MacIntyre – 1pt e/w @ 80/1 with bet365

I backed Robert MacIntyre in this last year, and I will continue to do so until he wins it! OK, maybe that is a bit extreme, but we know from previous conversations with the Scotsman that this is the title he wants. With that being said, and with a strong display in Ireland last week, I am surprised to see this price on offer.

MacIntyre has been impressive with the putter this season, ranking 25th on the DP World Tour for SG: Putting, and has two top-20 finishes in this event in the past two editions. Flashes of form in the desert at the start of the season demonstrate again that he can hack it in the wind, and I am not going to pretend this would not be my favourite win of the season if it were to come in. Bring it home, Bob.

The Why Not: Victor Perez – 1pt e/w @ 150/1 with bet365

This seems a shrewd selection in my opinion, especially if you can get extra places on an each-way bet. Victor Perez won recently at the Dutch Open, and followed up with a 3rd-place finish at the European Masters. On top of his recent form, the Frenchman has great wind form, winning the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in 2019 alongside a host of strong finishes in the desert throughout his career.

Perez has made the cut at the Renaissance Club on each of the last three visits, with a best of 14th place, so don’t be surprised to see him go close at a very tasty price.
