Watch the incredible clip as Will Zalatoris’s ball ends up in the most improbable of places during the Scottish Open
The more we watch this one, the more we still can’t get over it. Matt Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris were involved in one of the craziest situations you’ll ever see during round one of the Scottish Open.
After both players failed to reach the green in two on the mammoth par-5 16th at Renaissance, it then became a chip off between the two in-form stars.
Fitzpatrick cack-handed one in to six feet, marking his ball with one of those giant poker chips your flashy mate always uses.
Willy Z followed, and well, just take a look at what happened next…
The commentators were in awe. “Have you ever seen that?” they yelped as Zalatoris’s ball somehow stopped on top of Fitzpatrick’s marker.
Even caddies Billy Foster and JJ Jakovac – looper of Collin Morikawa who was also playing in the group – both had to reach for their phones and get a snap of the insane moment.
Of course, after the chaos calmed down, the next question everyone had was, now what?
As per rule 15.2a – which allows relief when a ball is on a movable obstruction on the putting green – Zalatoris was able lift his ball, penalty free, while Fitzpatrick then moved his marker thanks to rule 15.3c, allowing the American to putt out.
Both players then holed their par efforts to complete one of the most unlikely sequences we’ve ever seen on a golf course.
It was the first time Fitzpatrick and Zalatoris had paired up since their epic dual at the US Open, and while we knew there would be fireworks, no one was expecting them to be this far on the mark…
