In a scathing rant, Eddie Pepperell has blasted Henrik Stenson for turning his back on the Ryder Cup to prioritise his ‘back pocket’
Ask Eddie Pepperell to comment on a contentious issue in the world of golf and the Englishman rarely fails to deliver.
Following Henrik Stenson’s stunning dismissal from the Ryder Cup captaincy in favour of the LIV big bucks, Pepperell has weighed in once again with a scathing, perfectly to the point critique of the Swede’s betrayal.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the Cazoo Classic, Pepperell slammed the likes of Stenson and Ian Poulter for prioritising “their back pocket” over golfing prestige, while insisting the Ryder Cup remains bigger than any individual.
“I’m not surprised at all,” Pepperell said. “It’s a shame. I hoped six months ago that none of this would happen, but it’s happened and clearly to a person I think they all regard their back pocket to a higher degree than anything else. That’s fine. But say it.
“It’s disappointing and I thought the sport had more and Ryder Cup success had much more to offer than simple monetary reward for playing a new tour that doesn’t offer up much as far as I can tell – certainly competitively. So I’m not surprised, but it is a shame.
“The Ryder Cup will move beyond it. With all due respect to Henrik or Poulter, whoever it is, the Ryder Cup is a bigger entity and will always be a bigger entity than any individual.”
And, after the epic rant, Pepperell wasn’t done there, immediately taking to Twitter to continue his shaming of Stenson while urging the Swede to admit his true motivations for joining LIV Golf:
Henrik, just be honest, it was a bucket load of cash and you couldn’t resist it, like the rest of the guys.
Will always love your game (especially those mid-irons!) but what a disappointing thing to do.
