Two weeks after telling the DP World Tour he was done with them, Sergio Garcia has U-turned in the hope of being part of Team Europe next September
Sergio Garcia is clinging onto hope that he can still make the Ryder Cup team next year.
At The Open, the LIV Golf defector said he felt “unloved” by the DP World Tour and that he would be resigning his membership to play solely in the LIV Golf series.
But the idea of missing out on the Ryder Cup – a competition for which he is the leading points scorer of all time – has seemingly proved too much for the 42-year-old.
“I want to at least see what’s happening when Ryder Cup qualification starts – see what kind of rules and eligibilities they have in there,” Garcia told ESPN.
“If I agree with what they [are], I’ll definitely keep playing whatever I can on the tour and try to qualify for that Ryder Cup team.
“And if not, then we’ll move on, but it is definitely something that is in my mind.”
In order to qualify for the Rome matches next September, American players must be a member of the PGA Tour, which has dished out bans to anyone joining LIV.
The DP World Tour, meanwhile, has punished but not banned anyone taking up Greg Norman’s offer of a Saudi payday.
And Garcia added: “I told [DP World Tour chief executive] Keith Pelley, ‘I want to keep being a member of the DP World Tour. I want to play my minimum, still support the tour, still have my eligibilities to make Ryder Cup teams.’
“He said, ‘That’s great, but we’ve got to do what’s best for us. We’ll see what that is.’”
On Henrik Stenson’s dismissal as European captain, Garcia simply said: “It’s a little bit sad.”
