Titleist Velocity golf ball review: NGC verdict

The Titleist Velocity golf ball sits lower in the Titleist range than my gamer, the Titleist Pro V1x. I was curious to try a ball designed for maximum distance as I have always been searching for a ball with lots of spin and control.

I collected TrackMan data with my driver, 7-iron and on 60-yard wedge shots as well as chipping and putting around the green.

My first reflections were that the ball felt very springy and penetrating off the face of the club, especially with a driver. I didn’t necessarily like the sound and feel off the club face as it felt a little hard and almost plastic compared to my usual softer Pro V1x golf ball. However, the Trackman data on my long game shots pleasantly surprised me.

I was launching it 3 degrees higher with a driver and carrying it 10 yards further. I was also getting an extra 32 yards of rollout. That’s seriously hard to turn down!

Again the seven iron was launching higher, and I was carrying it 5 yards further. I couldn’t believe how much distance I was gaining just from switching golf balls.

There is a small downside to all of this distance. I found that the control with my pitch shots from 60 yards and small chips disappeared. With my pitch shots, the Titleist Velocity was rolling out up to 40 feet. I would want more control from this yardage but if you like to run the ball up the green it could be a great option.

Again when putting, the feel was a little harsh, but I really liked the thick black side stamp. I found I didn’t have to add my usual sharpie line as this already worked great for alignment.

Upon reflection, the Titleist Velocity golf ball positively surprised me. The extra distance gained can be a game changer and I am considering playing it as my winter ball when the greens are slower and I require less spin. It also sits at a great price point and is perfect for the player wanting to get that little bit further down the fairway and still have fun.
