First Impressions

I was really interested to test the Bounce Waterproof trouser, having already reviewed the Bounce Rain jacket and trousers. The Waterproof trouser differs from the rain trouser in that it functions as a normal pair of trousers, which can be worn, for example, in the office (if you’re not working from home). But, because it’s made from exactly the same StretchDry 15,000 fabric as the Rain trouser, it performs just as well as a waterproof.

Just as with the Rain trouser, the fabric felt really soft and stretchy. The cut is rather more tailored than the Rain trouser, probably because the latter will usually be worn over a standard pair of trousers. The StretchDry 15,000 fabric is a three-layer build with a waterproof and breathable membrane sandwiched between two identical soft and stretchable layers of fabric.

The fabric is described as a 4-way stretch, it stretches crossways and lengthways – it’s certainly very stretchy. The trousers are waterproof to 15,000mm, which makes them waterproof in all but the heaviest rain, and breathable to 15,000 g/sq metre, which means they’re breathable for high-energy activities. They come with a 3-year waterproof guarantee. All seams are fully sealed with soft and flexible tape.

On Course Testing

In trouser fittings, I am generally a pretty consistent 32-inch waist, 29-inch inside leg, and this garment fitted true to size.

The waistband is nice and stretchy, so there’s a bit of leeway with the waist size. There is a press stud and velcro closure at the top of a zippered fly. A minor point is that there was no ‘gripper’ waistband that is present in some of the other top trouser brands (which helps to keep your shirt tucked in position). The bottom of the trouser is like a normal trouser with no zippered openings as seen in more traditional waterproof trousers.

Testing has been carried out on a number of occasions in typical wintery conditions. Unlike your typical waterproof trousers, these are designed to be worn as a single layer, which has worked perfectly in terms of comfort and warmth. There’s always the option to wear a thin base layer beneath, but that hasn’t been necessary yet. And in terms of performance, these behave just like a standard pair of trousers. Unlike a standard pair of trousers, they have remained completely waterproof in some pretty heavy downpours.

To my mind, the pocket configuration can be a real source of frustration with waterproof overtrousers. Is it a pocket or a slit to access the standard trousers beneath? Does it close with velcro or a zip (or both)? When the rain stops, and the sun comes out, and you want to take the overtrousers off, tees and ball markers need to be transferred from one garment to the other. The list of irritations goes on and on.

Enter the Abacus Bounce Waterproof trouser, with two roomy front pockets and two more at the rear. And these are standard pockets with no zips or velcro, which makes me very happy.

The 19th hole

As you probably gather, I’m very impressed with this latest offering from Abacus. These trousers are stylish, comfortable and functional. Since they arrived on my doorstep, they have been my default pair of trousers. They perform really well on the course and look perfectly fine off the course with no excessive logo or branding stuff going on.
