This year the NCG team have rigorously tested thirty-one different pairs of newly released shoes from eleven of golf’s most notable brands to put together our list of the best winter golf shoes that you can buy in 2023.

We’ve worn them in the sun, in the rain, in the sleet, on our home courses, on away courses, in the fairway, in the sand, in the rough, and sadly even in the heather to be able to create honest reviews you the club golfer can actually trust.

We’ve scoured through all the press releases and know all the technology, and left no stone unturned to be able to assemble our list of the best winter golf shoes 2023.

Skechers Go Golf Pro 5 Hyper golf shoes

Skechers Go Golf Pro 5 Hyper golf shoes review

Reviewed by Paul Miller

The research and development that has gone into this shoe is clearly effective via the podiatrist certified arch support. There is a lot written about foot fatigue, and these shoes seem to have addressed this in a comprehensive manner. I can honestly say it is the comfiest golf shoe I have worn, combined with no issues at all when it comes to grip. Interestingly I am normally a UK size 12 but the size 11 fit perfectly well and so that might be something to consider when ordering.

It is fair to say that before putting them on I would have been apprehensive wearing these off the golf course. But by the end of the round, it would not have bothered me walking into the Clubhouse spike bar. Primarily as they are more comfortable than my normal shoes. Overall, a fantastic shoe and I am now a Skechers convert.

PROS

  • Extremely comfortable
  • Great grip
  • Nice shape and styling

CONS

  • Pin stripe effect on the top may not be to everyone’s liking

Cuater The Legend golf shoes

5 star review

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

The upper is constructed from premium full-grade leather – it certainly looks and feels to be premium. The Cuater golf shoes classic looks are enhanced by very little in the way of branding, just a metallic ‘C’ to the side of the handsome lacing system and some subtle embossing on the tongue.

I was pleased to see a robust heel piece. Turning over to look at the sole design, there are nine removable spikes per shoe as well as over fifty small moulded spikes. Breaks in the outsole offer flexion to the forefoot and also help to control weight. Talking of weight, each shoe came in at 425 grammes, which is lighter than the average proper leather spiked shoe.

Performance, in terms of traction and stability, was first class. The heel piece provided a locked-in feel and the construction of the shoe offered excellent torsional rigidity in the mid section.

PROS

  • Extremely comfortable out of the box.
  • Classic and understated looks.
  • Well constructed.

FootJoy Premiere Series Tarlow golf shoes

4.5 star review

Reviewed by Jack Blackhouse

These shoes have the wow factor. Just like the FootJoy Icons, and FootJoy Classics before them, the Premiere series golf shoe has picked up the mantle to lead the way in the traditional golf shoe market, and oh my, have FootJoy nailed it.

These FootJoy golf shoes feature FJs revolutionary versatrax outsole, which offers 360 degrees of grip and stability by angling what are essentially spikeless shoe nubs in different directions, which, combined with the actual soft spikes virtually guarantee that you are going to have no issue playing any shot from any lie during your round of golf.

I haven’t worn the shoes in the rain yet but I have no concerns about their waterproof capabilities. FootJoy offer a 1-year waterproof warranty on these shoes which is great, I just don’t think I would take them out in the rain so as to not ruin them!

They’re incredibly smart and would only attract compliments even at the most prestigious clubs. I also would be happy wearing them with the right pair of shorts as despite being classic, they are an extremely versatile shoe.

PROS

  • Beautiful. Just look at them!
  • Excellent traction.
  • Really solid in the swing and underfoot

CONS

  • Firm out of the box, will need wearing in!

Under Armour Charged Draw 2 golf shoes

Reviewed by Jack Backhouse

I ordered a grey pair as I’m fed up with trashing white shoes in the mud in the wet winter/spring we’ve been cursed with in the UK recently, and absolutely loved the look of these out of the box. These shoes will be versatile moving into warmer weather suiting any colour chino I have in my wardrobe.

The traction and stability I had in these shoes was incredible. There was no chance of slipping and I felt like I had a tremendous grip of the ground on all different types of sloping lies, which gives me confidence when creating shots out on the golf course.

They are very much golf shoes. They look great and but with the spikes you are certainly not going to go straight from the course to the pub without changing your foot wear.

PROS

  • Easy to clean
  • Excellent traction.
  • Great for wide feet

Adidas ZG23 golf shoes

5 star review
Adidas ZG23 golf shoes

Reviewed by Alex Perry

The ZG23s are certainly eye-catching and the “cloud white and lucid blue”, as the box describes them, are perhaps not the colourway I would have chosen, but it’s OK because I’ve got a lovely Adidas Classic Club midlayer in a similar colour. And as Ian Poulter always says: “Look good, feel good, play good.”

The ZG23s have what Adidas call “Lightstrike cushioning” and “Insite sockliner”, which is really just a technical way of saying they keep your feet snug. But don’t underestimate the importance of that, by any means. You’ll be surprised at how grateful you are when you’re 13 or 14 holes deep into your round.

On the outside, you can expect to find yourself telling your golfing pals about the “Sprintskin synthetic upper with 3D stability wing” and the “Thintech contruction with D-Traxion outsole”. This is what keeps you nice and sturdy through your swing.

PROS

  • Comfortable straight out of the box
  • Sporty styling looks great
  • Stable
  • Five different colour options
  • Fairly priced against competitors

Stuburt Active-Sport golf boots

4 star review

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

Out of the box, these looked just like a pair of walking boots but with spikes. The look was functional rather than appealing, but you certainly get the impression that these boots can do what they’re meant to. There is a microfibre upper in contrasting textures, a removable cushioned insole and a generous amount of padding around the tongue and ankle.

The advantage of these is that you can march through puddles, thick wet rough and even shallow water hazards, sorry, penalty areas, with no concern that your feet will get wet. These boots remained completely weatherproof in testing conditions, thanks to Stuburt’s Dri-back waterproof technology.

One might expect such a comfortable shoe to compromise on performance. This was absolutely not the case on testing. The Fusion-Lite TPU sole offered excellent feel and traction. The nine cleats and some additional nubbins afforded excellent grip, with no hint of slipping.

Although I was not particularly fond of the look of the shoe, the comfort and performance were first class, and I think this would make an excellent winter shoe.

PROS

  • Surprisingly comfortable
  • Waterproof
  • Good value

CONS

  • Looks won’t appeal to all

Ecco M Golf Biom G5 golf shoes

4.5 star review
ecco biom g5 comfy shoes

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

Out of the box, this shoe had a high quality, athletic & sporty look. There is an embossed performance leather upper with a mesh tongue which gives a modern and smart look.

Testing was carried out over two rounds in cold and dry conditions on my home heathland course. As you would expect from Ecco, the G5 was extremely comfortable straight out of the box. Although I’m not wild about the appearance of the boa, it really did give a close fit. And there is a whole load of hidden technology which combines to offer comfort, stability and rotational support.

All this technology really does work. There is a firm and slightly springy feel underfoot. The outsole offered excellent grip from the six cleats and hybrid traction bar configuration that Ecco calls its Dynamic Traction System.

There was no hint of slipping even. when going for that extra few yards off the tee. Testing was not carried out in the wet but I am confident that these will be fully waterproof golf shoes and breathable thanks to the Gore-Tex construction. A twelve month waterproof guarantee is offered.

PROS

  • Very comfortable out of the box.
  • Excellent grip and traction.
  • Premium looks.

Best Golf Shoes 2023

How do we test golf shoes?

At National Club Golfer, we are passionate about producing accurate and thorough reviews and making sure our testing process is rigorous so we get a good understanding of how each pair of shoes performs.

Each shoe is worn out on the golf course whilst playing golf, so we can get an idea of overall performance in terms of factors like comfort, grip, stability in the golf swing, waterproof protection and how they actually look on the golf course.

What is important when buying Golf shoes?

When buying new golf footwear its important to know what attributes or features you value the most before deciding on a brand or model to buy. For example, do you want spiked or spikeless shoes?

A lot of golfers think comfort is paramount when choosing a shoe, we are going to be standing in them for 3-5 hours right? Some golf shoes on the market have special insoles and cushioned mid-soles designed to keep your feet feeling fresh. Also it’s pretty common for golfers with wide feet to wear the wrong sized pair of golf shoes so its worth getting fit properly.

Grip is vital to good performance on the golf course as any foot slip in dry or wet conditions can not only cause the golf club to swing improperly but may also lead to an injury.

Nearly all golf shoes will either be fully waterproof or offer some kind of water resistance, and this is important as real die-hard golfers play in every weather condition. Having wet feet for 4 hours is not and will never be fun.

How good the shoe looks is of course subjective to personal style, but is important to any player. Do you prefer an athletic-looking shoe, or are you more traditional? Does your shoe offer on-course off-course style or do you want shoes purely for the course? Does the style of shoe you like have the best color options for your golfing wardrobe?

Price is the last factor to consider. With the models above we have tried to find shoes at all different price points so if you want a shoe at a lower cost, you can get one. Or if you want to spend more, you can do that too. Importantly there is something for everyone.

spikeless golf shoes

What brands produce the best golf shoes?

All of the products in this best golf shoes 2023 article are picked from the brands that offer what we believe to be the best spikeless shoes on the market.

Do any pros wear spikeless golf shoes on tour?

As you will see on TV when watching the PGA, LPGA & DP World Tour, professionals wear both spiked and spikeless golf shoes, depending on their preference.

Some tour players are looking for extra stability and grip for maximum power creation that a spiked golf shoe might offer, and others are looking for the comfort and style that spikeless golf shoes offer. Some tour players prefer a running shoe style, and others a traditional classic leather shoe; there really isn’t a hard or fast rule as to what tour players wear.
