At just 19 years old, Casey Jarvis stood on the 18th tee at Dainfern Country Club staring Sunshine Tour history in the eye. Matt Chivers tells you what happened next
It isn’t often you see a 59 scored in a golf tournament.
It certainly isn’t common to see 59 broken in any golf tournament. Casey Jarvis had a great opportunity to do just that on the Sunshine Tour this weekend.
Starting in the third round of the Stella Artois Players Championship, the 19-year-old made seven birdies on the front nine at Dainfern Country Club.
After playing the front nine in just 29 shots, Jarvis kicked on with two eagles on the back nine. One on the par-5 12th and one on the par-4 17th.
Throw in more birdies on holes 10 and 14, and Jarvis was 13-under-par for the day standing on the 18th tee box.
“I definitely didn’t wake up this morning thinking about a 59,” Jarvis said afterward. “I haven’t been playing well leading up to this round but everything just went for me today. You get out there and the putts just start dropping.”
A birdie would’ve meant a 58, an eagle could’ve secured a 57.
Jarvis settled for a tap-in par to equal the lowest round on the South African Tour set by Peter Karmis in 2009.
“I hit some good-quality shots and rolled in a lot of good putts,” he added. “The putt on seven was quite long and when that went in I knew it was going to be something quite special.
“The eagle on the 17th was really big. I stood on the 18th tee with 59 in my mind. I hit a bad drive but got it done. It’s so tough to do.”
The man from State Mines CC is currently 13th in the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit and he has also played in seven events on the DP World Tour schedule this season.
Breaking 60 is quite the achievement for any player, but to do it before turning 20 proves there are exciting times ahead for Jarvis.
