Reports say the fictional comedy will focus on the new and ongoing tussle between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, with Hollywood star Will Ferrell in a leading role
Whether it’s a struggling basketball star in Semi-Pro, a controversial figure skater in Blades of Glory, or a ridiculed NASCAR driver in Talladega Nights, Will Ferrell has never shied away from sharing his passion for sport on the big screen.
And now, it seems, the 55-year-old is set to star in a sitcom about golf.
According to Deadline, Ferrell is being lined up to play “a professional golfer who becomes the face of a controversial new league competing with the PGA”.
Now we don’t want to jump to too many conclusions, but it sounds a lot like they’re going to make a comedy about golf’s civil war between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour to us, with Ferrell portraying the Greg Norman role.
It would mark the first TV comedy series for Ferrell, a sports journalism major at the University of South California, whose career has largely been spent on the big screen. You’ll more likely know him as Buddy from the cult Christmas classic Elf, or as Ron Burgundy in the impossibly popular Anchorman series.
Ferrell is a keen golfer in his spare time and plays regularly in the Cancer for Colleges Classic, a charity event set up by a former schoolmate, in which – the San Diego Union-Tribune reports – someone once paid $57,000 to play in his group.
