Need a fix to keep those pesky showers at bay this Spring? Let the Sunderland Aspen control the elements whilst you control on your game, says Ben Outhwaite
It’s Sunderland’s Aspen showerproof golf midlayer in the spotlight today. We’re out of April, but May still gets showery. As done every other month in the UK. With that in mind, what better opportunity than to review this piece of kit?

Sunderland Aspen showerproof golf midlayer review: First Impressions
For me, there’s nothing worse than feeling cold when playing golf. It puts me off my game and makes me focus on being uncomfortable.
I can guarantee the first thing that you’ll notice when you open the packaging of this midlayer is how thick it feels.
The construction feels perfect for those damp, rainy day. And indeed it is, as the midlayer features a Teflon DWR finished design that is water repellent, making it totally showerproof. Hurrah!
It’s also got a really sporty look to it. The torso area is covered by a grey panel, contrasted by striped raglan sleeves and a chin guard high collar.
The midlayer is made from 100% performance polyester, which means its material always keeps its shape. No more worrying about those creases and kinks after stuffing it in your golf bag ready for emergencies!
There’s a decent amount of branding on show, with Sunderland embroidered branding on the right sleeve and on the collar.
Not only is it showerproof, it’ll keep the wind at bay too, thanks to that Teflon DWR finish.
Sunderland boast how breathable and mobile this jacket is. It’s constructed using bonded jersey interlock fabrics and includes a drawstring on the collar with a gun metal toggle, so I’m expecting big things on the course here…
Sunderland Aspen showerproof golf midlayer review: On The Course
The scene was set: testing day was a cold, wet and windy one at that. Would the Aspen live up to expectations?
When I sauntered up to the first tee, it started to pour down. Thankfully I had an umbrella with me, otherwise my head would have got soaked.
I know what you’re thinking: I’m about to moan about the lack of hood on this showerproof midlayer. I’m not actually, although it would actually be quite nice…
When you get wet, you get cold. So staying dry was key on this day. Did it keep me dry? Check.
I could actually see the raindrops fleeing the surface of the midlayer as they hit the shell. Was the rain scared of me? Well, if it was, hopefully it’ll stay that way from now on.
Round 2: the wind. By the next hole, the rain had fled, but its angry cousin had come out to play.
He didn’t seem too angry at me though; my playing partner’s jacket had blown up as they do when it blows a gale. As you can see above, the jacket retained its shape perfectly and resisted any wind that was present.
The final test here was its freedom of movement. That really is paramount in golf with the swing playing such an imperative role in the game.
First of all, you won’t hear it when you play. It’s silent. Do I want to hear that annoying noise clothes make when they’re moved about? Certainly not during my swing.
It’s stretchy, too I’ll give it that. Freedom of movement? Affirmative.
Sunderland Aspen showerproof golf midlayer review: The 19th hole
What does this midlayer NOT have? Well, not much. It’s windproof, showerproof, mobile and versatile.
I’ll be honest, I haven’t worn it off the course yet, but I will. This kind of kit is wearable through all seasons, come rain or shine. So show it some love when the weather Gods make a guest appearance in the middle of the year.
If I had a magic wand, I’d swap the colour for the white/Navy/Red version, which I’ve put an image of a little bit further down the page. How awesome does that look?
All in all, the Aspen golf midlayer really is a top piece of kit. The best one I’ve come across so far this year, in fact. It’s got a little bit of everything, so do the right thing and get one for your golf wardrobe!
