This $5.5M Iowa mansion has 9-hole course, beach

One of Iowa’s most expensive residential homes has been listed for sale in Johnston, and homebuyers who can afford the $5.5 million purchase price will be spoilt for choice in ways to entertain guests, indoors, or out.

Sitting on a substantial 25.79 acres, the seven-bedroom, six-bathroom home resides at 7395 N.W. 100th St., the centerpiece of a huge footprint more commonly associated with million-dollar homes located west of Des Moines.

Listed by the WB Realty Co., broker Matt Guns said the home conveys an immediate statement to first-time visitors. “You’re not necessarily just buying a property, you’re buying an entire lifestyle,” he said.

Accessible via a private driveway connected to 100th St., the two-story home is attached to a four-car garage. The front door opens into a living room with a fireplace, tall ceilings and large windows facing the mature foliage in the rear garden.

An open-plan, eat-in kitchen features a convenient butler’s pantry.

The first-floor primary bedroom provides direct access to the back patio and leads to a walk-in closet and an ensuite oversized bathroom that Guns described as “truly like walking into a spa.”

A few steps from the stairwell, a home office is visible behind a glass door and walls. Upstairs offers its own living room space, additional bedrooms, and a laundry area.

“From the second floor, you can actually see 801 Grand and the Iowa Capital, all the way from Johnston. It’s just one more impressive thing about the property,” Guns said.

Down in the basement, the layout is furnished with a purpose-built exercise area, a casual entertainment space and bar, a media room for movie watching and a walk-in wine cellar stabilized by its own dedicated temperature controls.

This home features an in-ground heated pool for year-round swimming.
Outside the home, a separate unattached building is large enough for four other vehicles. The owners and their guests can relax in the heated, in-ground swimming pool.

To the east, three more outbuildings include a structure that previously housed golf carts to ferry guests around a custom 9-hole golf course that stretches out behind the main house. The course was designed with six manicured putting greens and paved pathways for the carts to maneuver around the grounds.

At the southern end of the land, a private pond is unexpectedly bordered by a man-made beach, upgraded with lounging chairs and a fire pit. A covered jetty enables easy access into the water, or to potentially moor small watercraft.

The address is also zoned to raise horses on the property, a popular activity in the neighborhood. Guns and his colleagues are hesitant to predict the type of buyer with the ability to purchase a home of this scale. “It’s hard to determine with a home of this price and size exactly who it will attract. But it can accommodate pretty much any use you can think of,” he said.

“You’re just not really going to find something like this within the metro. This is a very unique property in that you can get 26 acres right in the city,” he added.

The home is listed at $5.5 million by Matt Guns of WB Realty Co.
